In my second apollo project, I dove into the world of the punk rock music scene. I took a look at the reason behind the punk rock scene and why people wanted to participate. To share my newfound knowledge on the topic, I wrote a research paper on the history of punk rock music and the development of the culture for my history piece. For english, I annotated two songs, one from the 1970s and one from the 2010s so I could then compare how topics of punk rock songs have changed through the years. Finally to incorporate art, I created a collage of items from the punk rock era. I found all the objects in a trunk in my basement from when my dad was a part of a punk rock band. I did the collage on an old vinyl record and displayed it in a shadow box.
English Component
I analyzed two punk rock songs from different time periods to see how punk's views changed and how they felt about society as time went on. Both songs were from the point of view of the bands that created them. This was helpful with incorporating perspective into my project.
history component
This paper was to show how society felt about the punk rock culture. I watched documentaries and read articles to find information on punk rock throughout history. At some points, I focussed on how punks were treated and the challenges they faced in their everyday lives. My other focus was on what people that didn't participate in the culture thought when they saw punks.
Art component
For my art project, I decided to take a look closer into the punk side of the punk rock culture rather than looking through the eyes of society. I created a collage of punk rock paraphernalia I found in my dad’s “Punk Trunk”. My dad was into the punk scene throughout his 20s. He was the lead singer of a band called Sixsouth. We looked through his trunk in the basement full of things he collected through his time participating in the punk culture. In the collage, I put pins and stickers for punk bands, a patch, a bracelet my dad wore at this shows, and a Fugazi picture. I put everything onto a Submachine record from my dad’s vinyl collection. This collage portrays a lot of things that made up things like punk fashion and style.
Perspective in my project
In my project, I included perspective in different ways in each component. In my history portion, I looked from the perspective of society to find out how the punk rock culture was viewed and what people thought about punks. My art piece was from the perspective of a punk rocker. The piece contained items from my dad that he collected throughout his years in a punk rock band. I made this collage to portray the style and aesthetic of the punk rock culture. In english, I analyzed two songs and looked from the perspective of the bands that wrote the songs to find out their views and perspective on the issues their songs discussed.
