For my first project in Apollo, I took inspiration from one of my favorite things, horror movies. My main focus was centered around the idea of loneliness and isolation. I looked at two different movies from two different time periods and compared how each used loneliness to create fear. I learned a lot about how filmmakers and story writers look into problems and topics going on in society to make realistic fear in films and how those themes have changed throughout decades. Below you can find a research paper and my art piece for this project.
English component
I analyzed two horror movies from different decades to create this paper. My main focus was on how their themes of loneliness were portrayed and what aspects of the decade added to the portrayal of loneliness. I watched "Psycho" and "Get Out". Each film had strong themes of loneliness that were used to add suspense and fear to the viewers of the movies.
History Component
I did research for my history portion to show my knowledge and understanding of the topic I was studying. I then tied this research into my english project.
Art Component
My art project is a portrayal of loneliness. It demonstrates an idea of what I see in my head when I think of loneliness. My project is mainly focussed on horror but this project takes a look at the entire idea of loneliness through my eyes. I separated myself to look inside my own mind so I would be able to fully represent my thoughts and visions when I am feeling lonely. This piece shows how small I envision myself as a singular person. When I’m lonely, I feel as if the entire world is looming over me, hence the large trees. Loneliness is confusing and most times there isn’t an end in sight. This was represented by the long winding path with no end. It splits off into two separate ways which is what I see as options when I am lonely, I can either take the path that takes me further into loneliness and hopelessness or choose the path that leads to happiness and better mental wellbeing.

Contextualization in my project
I took a look at loneliness on a smaller scale by looking at how it is used in horror movies. Then I took that theme of loneliness and contextualized it by looking at how loneliness is a fear in America and how events in society could be used to cause loneliness throughout the years. The overall project was an example of contextualization.
